Day 14 of Studio Project - PRESENTATION DAY

4 September 2014

Presentation Day:
Came to school at about 6am to compile the opening and do some refining to the video. So I combined the opening scene with the current video that we had. We've also done for our breakdowns, presentation slides, BTS video and official video. So we're all ready for presentation. However, when the video is being played, the audio seems too soft so when I reached home, I retune the audio to make it louder.

Came back school to do peer evaluation.We've combined all of the things that we need to submit like our individual folders, storyboard, script, synopsis, behind the scene footages, final presentation sildes, official final video, production schedule and our combined vfx breakdown video. So in overall, I enjoyed working with my group members for this studio project. I gained a lot of experiences and also get to know more about IXD.

Day 12 & 13 of Studio Project

Yesterday, we went for a photoshoot for our opening scenes. This is the plan of it.

So currently, I've added in the overall music audio into the film and also for those sound FX. I've also updated those shots that my group members had completed like for those trackings, improvising the effect shots for ice and fire. As for the first scene, we've decided to change into this NYP angle instead.

 

For the fire and ice scene, Alvin, Zul, Kang Lin and Kar Meng had improvised on it.

As for the last scene, Kang Lin had added in the effects whereby the laptop screen will change from black to the IXD website. 

 

Today we will finish up the title and credits. Later on, we will be getting feedbacks from Mr Ron and see what we can improvise it before finalizing it.

Day 11 of Studio Project

For today, I continued to compile any new footage that Alvin had done and put it into our video. Firstly, we have the ice effect shot that had the marker removed footage to be sub in.

So this is the screenshot of the footage. Then, I also had feedback from Mr Ron that for this shot the laptop screen area is too bright so I used after effects to draw a mask on it and dim it down so this is how it looks like from a screenshot.

 

I've also done the ambient audio for the whole footage but not yet for the overall music feel. As for this part, Alvin replaced the background TV with our senior's work. But Mr Ron suggest that we should remove the glowing effect which is appearing behind her.

 

This is roughly how my workarea looks like.

 

So currently that's about it. I will need to sub in the footage for a few scenes after Alvin had made the changes. 

These include:

1. Sequence 1 shot 1: Improvise the traffic light blinking colour.

2. Sequence 4 shot 2: CBB(Could be better) will be to track the "Digital Visual Effects" picture to not make it slide down when the camera is panning.

3. Sequence 4 shot 5: The fire effect to be improvised.

4. Sequence 4 shot 6: The glowing effect to be removed.

5. Sequence 4 shot 10: The ice effect to be put inside soon.

6. Sequence 5 shot 1-3: Track and stabilize the shots and roto to put in the IXD website link.

We'll be also working on the opening and logo design.

Day 10 of Studio Project

For day 10 of studio project, after reviewing with Mr Ron for our footages, I made some minor color corrections to some of the shots. Alvin helped to track some footage with relevant pictures inside and I sub the footage into the film. They've also reshoot the last scene which is the home scene of the secondary school student. So I've replaced the footage into the film clip also. Basically these are some of the screenshots that I cut the film for the last scene.

 

So basically for tomorrow I will compile the two vfx effect shots that we had currently and add into the video. I will also start adding in the remaining audios and testing out the music. I will also be doing the breakdown for my matte painting which is used in one of the scene whereby the student is doing the matte painting.

Day 8 & 9 of Studio Project

For yesterday and today, I continued to edit the film for our group. I tried to cut away those unnecessary film parts and for some of the blur scene.

For example, this particular footage in the first place is a bit blur so I forward to a few more frames till the part whereby the footage is sharp then I cut that part and joined it into our film clip.

Also, for this edit I added in the sequences and shots on top of our video for easy keep track when we were taking notes down of which to do color correction stuff.  For the voice audio part, Alvin helped me to sync the audios accordingly to which video. As for the first part whereby the two actors are walking along the corridor, I tried to change the angles of how the actors were walking just now to match the audio also.

 

I swapped these two shots to match Nazri's mouth as he speak his speech. For the color correction part, I've also gotten the help from Zul to help me see if it's alright. So for later and tomorrow I will continue on my color correction and also I will be adding in our first scene which is the establishing shot of NYP and SIDM and the final scene which is the home scene after we've done the reshoot tomorrow.

Day 6 & 7 of Studio Project

For this week, we filmed on the monday and tuesday. Initially, we wanted to film and wrap up by monday for most of the scenes. However, when we compiled our footages and reviewed it, we realised a few problems.

1. The lighting for some of the scenes were not that balance.
2. Actor initially handheld item changed position in the same scene.
3. We were informed that the location that we were filming might be renovating and we have to get it done perfectly or else we will have no chance to reshoot. Or else we might need to recee for another classroom which we didn't wanted as the shots planned were for that particular classroom.
4. There were some noises in the background, not really clear.
5. Some of the focus point for the shots are wrong.

Therefore, we made a decision to reshoot, initially, the first part of the film only. After we've reshoot during tuesday, we realised that all of the problems above are solved and it's actually improving. Thus, we decided to reshoot everything including the classroom scene instead. In the end, everything went well. For these two days, I compiled all of the footages together to check for the flow to ensure that it goes smoothly and in sequence. I have three rough cuts currently. For this 3 rough cut it will still be a silent clip as I haven't put in the audios and background musics.

As for today, I will refine my edits once Mr Ron has finished reviewing it. I will also continue to find music for it and testing it out.

Day 5 of Studio Project

Early in the morning for today, we gathered in 313 then we headed for 314 to learn some techniques from our seniors on how to do the fire effect. After then, I continued on my research for my matte painting. I think that for that scene, I might be either converting the trees in the photoshop to snowy feel or I will add in part by part elements in the photo. As for the later part, we went on for a rehearsal of how the filming process will be like with the actors. Then, we had a meeting session with Mr Ron to update our progress. So for the weekends, I will continue to finish up my matte painting and do more researches and music researches also. We will also be filming on Monday and hopefully everything will goes well and fine!

Day 4 of Studio Project

Firstly, in the morning we went to take our test shot/recee/storyboard. So by the time we met Mr Ron, we are able to show him at least the first part of our storyline. After then, we went for lunch and we continued on our research. We started to find more reference picture on our two effects that we will be doing it which will be the fire and ice. So we will be starting to film on Monday and Tuesday if we managed to secure our camera equipments. As for current, I will be starting to do the matte painting. This matte painting will be included in one part of the shot whereby the "ice" student is doing his matte painting using photoshop and he will change his arms into ice type. For the matte painting image I planned to use our school nyp building picture and make it into a snow scene. I went on to find tutorials on how to do a snow scene and I find it is not that easy to achieve what I want that easily. However, I will continue to search for ways to complete it by Monday so that the filming schedule wont be delayed.

Day 3 of Studio Project

Today, we met Mr Ron early in the morning to consult for our ideas and we actually realised that there are some problems in our idea and we came out with more ideas again. Thinking of new ideas, scrapping off ideas and thinking again the whole day. So at the end of the day we actually had this confirmed idea at last. This idea will be something like a student touring around SIDM and room by room he/she saw the stages of how one visual effect is created. Our visual effect for this story idea will be 1. the fire effect on top of one of the student hand and 2. one student's arms transferred into ice type. For now, I will continue to do research for the suitable music and shortlist some. I will also start to find research and tutorials for the VFX that we are doing. Hopefully everything will work out well tomorrow and we will be able to do our leica reel and those recee successfully!

Day 2 of Studio Project

For today, we went on to contribute more ideas in order to improve on our ideas. So currently, we've one idea that we are working on is whereby there will be this establishing shot inside the classroom. There will be one girl and one boy talking about what is visual effects to them. There will be effects appearing when they said out eg. magical. Then the argument continues for awhile. But for now we've not got a solid ending yet. We hope to end it and not feeling kind of weird or "off" ending. As for my part now, I am trying to find suitable music for our video to suit the mood. The music of choice will be happy, intense and peaceful. I will go to the NYP touch music database to search for music and note it down. As for the visual effects part, I will look at those tutorials these few days to brush up my skills and get some reference from it.

Day 1 of Studio Project

Today, we've started the group discussion with my DVE group and IXD group. So we had a bunch of ideas but initially, we mainly focus on those themes such as superheroes and futuristic. But these ideas were quite limited to expand further and it's difficult to come up with a more fresh ideas with such themes. It's quite difficult to think of the ideal idea as we need to consider some factors such as to allow secondary school graduating students to be attracted to our course after watching the video and it must not be seems like we are promoting certain object if we want to use that to link to our visual effects. Currently, our group had chosen this idea whereby one secondary kid is passionate towards drawing and hope to make it into a real object. We will use that to expand if possible as it's quite difficult to continue and link up the ideas. After I've went home, I went on to research for some other ideas by watching some interesting and cool commercials. I've seen some cool videos and I think it will help me to get more ideas.

So I've also suggest one idea. It's like maybe there is this random container or room and something inside the room might be glowing so there is this person out of curiosity went inside and take a look. After the person has came out he/she might gained a certain power eg.teleportation; fires on hand. The person next is amazed and will enter the room. The cycle will ends with the curiosity of what the video is advertising about. But for this idea, I am not sure of how to make it not boring and will attracts the viewers to watch to the end.
